Mechanical Response of FDM-Fabricated PEEK and Glass Fiber-Reinforced PEEK Under Varying Process Conditions

Polyether Ether Ketone (PEEK) is a high-performance polymer increasingly utilized in additive manufacturing due to its exceptional thermal, chemical, and mechanical properties. Thus, they are used to produce aerospace brackets, fuel system parts, seals, compressor valve plates, etc. This study investigates the mechanical performance of both neat PEEK and glass fiber-reinforced PEEK (PEEK + GF) composites fabricated via fused deposition modeling (FDM). The effects of print speed, print orientation, and post-heat treatment were systematically evaluated. Among the tested orientations, the 0° print direction with post-heat treatment at 250 °C yielded highest tensile strength of ~80 MPa, outperforming the 45° and 90° orientations.
