Most drones use cameras, depth, and distance sensors to perceive their surroundings. The drone from TU Delft uses artificial whiskers for this purpose.
A research team from Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) has developed a method based on artificial whiskers that allows autonomous drones to detect and fly around obstacles in dark and foggy environments. This eliminates the need for expensive, large, and energy-intensive sensors in smaller drones. Drones can thus explore their surroundings through gentle touches.
