Data rates and reliability in underwater wireless communication systems are severely constrained owing to factors such as turbidity and noise. Here we present a novel hybrid system, combining acoustic and optical technologies in a dynamic switching protocol guided by AI, reacting to environmental changes in real-time. Formulated with Nano-optimized materials and a new antenna configuration, the system can realize a data rate of 5 Mbps—40% higher than standard acoustic systems—and a 35% reduction in the electric power usage. Although fitted with a harmless radio wave, we conducted rigorous field tests during which the device reliably gathered 95% of signals from rivers, oceans and ports in undesired conditions. “This work fills in the missing link between fragmented technologies to provide game-changing applications in marine science, defense, and industrial exploration.”
