“Irresponsible” Action Sparks Concern for Expanding Unregulated Drone Operations
A mountain rescue in the Lake District was set back after a drone pilot flew dangerously close to an active helicopter operation, leaving crews stuck in position during a critical airlift. While, luckily, the story had a relatively positive outcome, the continuous growth in unauthorized drone activity raises concerns about how long that luck will continue.
The incident unfolded at Raven Crag in Cumbria, where a woman with a serious head injury required immediate evacuation. Two helicopters responded to the scene, including an air ambulance already on the ground and an HM Coastguard search and rescue (SAR) aircraft hovering above, setting up to lift the patient out.
A recreational drone entering the area quickly blocked that plan. According to rescuers, the helicopter was unable to approach the patient while the drone flew nearby.
